This is the polished block of wax with the finished tracing. See the rows
of dots around the tracing? This is where the paper was burnt to melt the
wax onto the paper. Well, it doesn't look quite like this after the paper
is peeled away. The tracing comes out much more faintly. Then the tracing
is enhanced with an engraver to look like this.
