| This is the beginning. See the axis of our
giant compass to the right of the three people. The only straight lines
in the labyrinth point right at the compass. I attached a chain to the
center and marked (using a 'magic' marker, of course) the correct dimensions
for path widths on the chain. Then Kay (of the Four Gold Stars) centered
pieces of masking tape onto the chain itself exactly over the marks on
the chain. You'll find out what the Gold Stars are for on the last page.
There is a 15 pound barbell weight holding down the axis of the compass.
We used a 4 pound wieght on the opposite, movable end of the chain to keep
it taut. When we laid out the chain as a radius of the circle, we aligned
small strips of masking tape on the rug with the masking tape on the chain.
This precisely transferred the precalculated dimensions from the chain
onto the rug. Note how close the tape 'dots' are near the center of the
circle. It's a good thing. We switched to putting them further apart. It's
easier to connect the dots when they are close together.
It went pretty fast. Three people would transfer positions onto the
carpet while a fourth would move the chain over a few feet after
they were done. In the end, five people working steadily without straining,
took 2 and 1/2 hours to make the pattern.
Thanks again to Robert Ferre for his ground breaking work describing
his ways for drawing the Chartres style and describing his technique for
laying out the masking tape pattern.
