University of Redlands Labyrinth

Early morning, November 8, 2004

I attended the Vigil for the Feast of Lights last night. What a moment of real beauty in my life! The combined choirs and instrumentalists were on cue and in tune. Seeing the lighting of the Feast Light fills me with hope that our world will soon become more peaceful.

As I write at 5:45 a.m. this morning, the rain has stopped, but the streets are wet. We'll be at the labyrinth around 8 to see what we can do today.

Rain stops our coloring work. If the color gets wet before it is dry, the color can bleed onto the paths.

I think that it is going to dry out today, despite what weather.com is forcasting. We'll use a leaf blower to dry off the pattern this morning so we can get started with our coloring again. We'll keep an eye on the sky and be ready with some tarps to throw over our work in case it does start to rain.

I have to thank you all again and again for showing us the open hearted generosity that we've received while making your labyrinth. It's really fulfilling to be treated like royalty. It's another indication that I'm doing the right thing with my life. Thank you.

November 8th, morning.

This is the progress on Sunday.

Coloring the labyrinth is a low tech sort of thing. It's very hand labor intensive. Some have called it tedious. But you have to concentrate in order to do it well. So the time passes quickly

We use rulers as barriers or masks when we are coloring. The ruler is put into the groove we cut. We then 'paint' the colored concrete onto the line. The ruler keeps the color from slopping onto the path. The lines between the paths are relatively 'easy' to color. The lunations and more tightly curved areas are another matter.

Lunations consist of two curves and a short, straight section. You have to move the ruler and hold it in a weird position to keep the color off the part of the labyrinth you don't want to color. Then you have to change to a much smaller ruler to color the short area of the lunation.

Since I'm the one who has done all the lunations, Dan called me a luna-tech yesterday!

Fred and Janet Edwards

Fred and Janet have brought us tea and cookies and treated us to an evening in their hot tub. I just got off the phone with my wife, Annette. I told her that she and I will continue to be as happy together as we are now, so that we will have as excellent a life as Janet and Fred are enjoying. Thanks for your inspiration, Fred and Janet.
