I'm very proud to say that Dr. Jon Hunner is my brother. He's a Professor of History at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He's created a large body of work contributed to their Oral History program as well as a Public History program.
While making Annette's and my Spring Equinox visit to Las Cruces, Jon and Mary Ellen invited me to lay out a labyrinth in their big back yard! Naturally, I was honored. The back yard is irrigated with water from the Rio Grande. The area occupied by the labyrinth is a few inches higher than the rest of the yard so it is drier! Note that where I am standing looks more gray and dusty than the brown grass in the background. The water does not reach this part of the yard. And... you're right, the water hasn't reached the rest of the yard this year either! :-) We'll see what happens after the labyrinth has been over this spot for a few years...
Here is an image of me comparing my plans on paper to the measurements on the ground.
All the labyrinths I make start out with some measuring. We used the 5 point seed pattern to lay out a very symmetric classical seven circuit labyrinth pattern. It's the same pattern I love to make in masking tape for indoor events.
Once I know where the center of the labyrinth and its entrance lie, I can mark the path walls onto the ground. Since I know where the center is, and I've attached a string to a stake at the center, we can paint concentric curves on the ground with a paint wand. I like the image of using a magic wand to mark out the paths. The
next page shows the paint wand in action
