Jan Thomas, Director of Day Treatment at Eliada Home
(www.eliada.org) called David Gallagher at the
Labyrinth Society in May. She asked if there was anyone in the Asheville Area who could make them a labyrinth. They had this wonderful, round concrete slab that they weren't using. David referred her to me!
Here is a satellite image of the slab from Google Maps. Zoom in on the 'A' marker:

See that light colored round dot to the left of "A"? That is the concrete slab a few years ago. McDonald's on Merrimon was upgrading its playground and donated the old one to Eliada Homes. They got it there and installed it and then the insurance company said they wouldn't cover it!
So they took it down. The concrete slab sat, lonely, weathering, un-used.
Jan Thomas loves labyrinths. She finds a lot of insight while walking them. She knows the labyrinth will be a real asset for children and their families who are working to develop their relationships. She knew that this lonely slab would be the perfect place for the Eliada Home Labyrinth.
Mark Smith from St. Louis drove the
Labyrinth Enterprises truck to Chattanooga where we installed a concrete logo for
Alstom. I had asked Robert to borrow his tools when he was not using them. After we were done, it seemed natural to drive the truck a few hours north to Asheville and use Robert Ferre's tools for their original purpose, to build labyrinths.
Mark and I cut the large circles and the turns into the concrete.
This is as far as I've gotten. I'm building a saw to cut the lunations. I expect it will be done tomorrow, June 24
th, and I'll cut the lunations on Friday, the 25
th.
I'll keep updating this story as more gets done! We expect to begin coloring the pattern around July 19
th.
FLASH! Coloring is postponed until August 31st. See our Volunteers' Page for more information on how you can help!
