We arrived at the Sophia Retreat Center (www.sophiaretreatcenter.com)Sunday evening. It's now Wednesday. We are making good progress.
Here is an image of the labyrinth pad from near our rooms. The setting of this labyrinth is superb. Nestled in a little valley (a draw in local terms), surrounded by Ponderosa Pine, Juniper, and Pinon Pine, it makes a perfect place to find one's Self. This labyrinth is in a wild setting, close to modern amenities. I'm writing these web pages from my room at the west end of their suites of rooms.
The labyrinth site on top of these stones has the feeling of the Great Kiva at Chaco Canyon. Even though the Kiva is over 800 years old, the labyrinth site already possesses the feeling of ancient and sacred energy. A closeup of the pad:
We made good progress in masking out the pattern of the labyrinth. This image shows Robert and Jess Armstrong working on the lunations around the outer edge of the pattern. There are 112 lunations, 4 times 28 (the number of days in a lunar month), around the outer edge. They must be spaced exactly right or else some of them will be too fat, or too skinny, or too long, or too short. Robert invests a lot of care in building his labyrinths. Jess is now one of the carriers of this tradition of beautiful precision.
We've marked out the main circles which define the paths of the labyrinth. Note the masking tape on the concrete in front of Jess and under Robert. The double line at Robert's toe will be a 'wall', that part of the labyrinth which borders the path. The wide space between his right heel and left knee is where the lunations will go.
