Labyrinth construction journal September 17th, 2004

This is our last day of cutting. We use a variety of diamond edged saw blades to cut the concrete. We start with an 8 and 1/2 inch blade and cut the large circles which define the circular paths. We drop to a 3 inch blade to cut the lunations and labrys'. Finally, we connect our larger cuts with a 1 inch diameter blade. As our detail gets finer, our tools get smaller. The one inch saw blade is held in something like a dentist's grinder. You can't see the flexible drive shaft coming out of the back of the tool in this image, but it's there. We use this small wheel to connect the larger curves.

Here is an example of what we have to do to touch up our cutting. The two lines coming in from the right were cut with our 8 1/2 inch blade.

The curved line that almost connects the two lines was cut with our little 1 inch blade on a special jig that helps to cut 3 inch circles. We use the small blade to connect the lines. This connecting the lines is done 'free hand'. We work the tool pretty hard. The handpiece gets so hot that we have to wear a glove to keep from burning our hands.
