| This Ravenna style labyrinth is over 40 ft. in diameter.
There's a stream just out of view at the bottom of the picture. It whispers
and chuckles a divine melody as we walk.
The original Ravenna is found as a pavement labyrinth in the Basilica
San Vitale in Ravenna Italy. There's also a smaller version in Rome, laid
into the tile floor of the Papal quarters.
It has really interesting rythm to it, as one goes straight into the
center and then walks the path gradually moving out and back in again.
It's built on a slight hill, higher at the car, lower to the bottom left
corner of the image. When you first walk in, that straight path is down
hill. The consciousness of this pattern comes on immediately.
I first laid it out on paper in July of 2001. I dowsed the 'best' place
for the center and the mouth. I marked the center with a steel stake. Finally,
a chain with the proper dimensions marked out on it was connected to the
stake. My trusty weed eater made short work of the long grass.
I used a weed eater for the first mowing because I knew I could cut
the paths very precisely with it. I also planned the paths to be 22 inches
wide and the walls about 8 inches wide. When I mow the path now with my
22 inch wide lawn mower it's easy to stay on the path! |
